If Neil Young’s infamous Archives project was released when he said it would be, it would have come out on VHS tape — Young has been ruminating about the possibility of releasing nearly everything he’s done in one package since the 1980s. But for Young, release dates came and went like wedding anniversaries, and still he tinkered, until he felt the time and technology were to his liking.

The latest, and presumably final, word: Neil Young’s near-mythical Anthology project will finally see the light of day on June 2nd. The news was broken by the Canadian songwriting giant’s longtime manager, Elliott Roberts, who premiered portions of the Anthology at South By Southwest on Friday. The 10-disc Blu-Ray version retails at $299. There will also be a 10-DVD box for $199 and a CD version for $99.
And really, it’s just the tip of the iceberg. Roberts said the plan was to release four more box sets, containing a total of 50 discs, at a rate of once every two to three years. So, Neil Young fans, start saving your lunch money. Or maybe you can cut down on gas costs, by buying one of Young’s new experimental cars.
Also at the festival, director Johnathan Demme, who directed Young’s 2006 concert film Heart of Gold, unveiled his second movie of the artist in concert, Neil Young’s Trunk Show, at the Paramount Theatre. Shot mainly on hand-held cameras during two performances at Philadelphia’s Tower Theater in December 2007, it contains classic cuts like “Cinnamon Girl,” acoustic performances, and an epic, 20-minute version of 2007’s “No Hidden Path.”
Young will release Fork in the Road, a concept album about centered around driving and electric cars, on April 7th.
Here’s the track list:
“When Worlds Collide”
“Fuel Line”
“Just Singing A Song”
“Johnny Magic”
“Cough Up The Bucks”
“Get Behind The Wheel”
“Off The Road”
“Hit The Road”
