MTV VMAs Skips Biggest Record-Breaking Awards of the Night as Fans Air Their Grievances

The MTV VMAs celebrated a big milestone tonight, broadcasting its 40th award show. However, the format of the VMAs left something to be desired. Fans and viewers at home were left waiting for big award announcements that never happened, like Artist of the Year or Best Pop. Additionally, several records were broken tonight, and many viewers weren’t even aware.

People took to social media to air their various grievances, with many questioning why there seemed to be only a few awards at this year’s “award show.”

“Calling the VMA’s on not actually announcing awards…this is disappointing,” wrote one Twitter user. They added, “It almost feels like they don’t want to announce Taylor’s wins on camera? Artist of the year??? Just an afterthought?”

Taylor Swift won five awards, which broke Beyoncé’s record for most VMA wins ever. Swift now has 30 VMAs, which put her one over Beyoncé’s 26. However, if you were watching from home, you may have not known that she broke the record.

Fans Confused Over MTV VMAs Over Skipping Biggest Awards of the Night

Other fans noted that there were more performances than actual awards given. “So…this MTV VMA format… I’m down for performances but don’t advertise it as an awards show. Advertise it as a concert with some talking,” another Twitter user commented.

MTV has been tweeting out the awards that they didn’t broadcast, which included Artist of the Year, Best Pop, Best Hip-Hop, Best Rock, Song of the Summer, Best Alternative, and VMAs Most Iconic Performance, among others. They did, however, broadcast Best Collaboration, Song of the Year, Best New Artist, and Best Latin.

“The way y’all just aren’t airing the biggest award of the night to the biggest artist in the world as she becomes the most awarded artist in VMA history is wild,” wrote one Taylor Swift fan, referencing Swift’s record-breaking night.

Overall, fans are not happy about this format. For a huge anniversary show like this—celebrating 40 years of incredible moments and music—viewers are missing out on many record-breaking awards. Having said that, more and more award shows have begun to shift award announcements off-screen in an effort to keep live entertainment at the forefront of their telecast.
