Since 2006, plans have been in the works for an MTV Films/Paramount biopic about aging glam metal stars Mötley Crüe. When the deal was initially inked two years ago, the movie was to be directed by Larry Charles of Borat fame and based upon the band’s 2001 biography The Dirt co-written with Neil Strauss. There were even rumors that Christopher Walken had signed on the play Ozzy Osbourne and Val Kilmer had agreed to play David Lee Roth, two singers whose antics with Mötley Crüe appears in The Dirt. Early rumor reports initially indicated a 2008 release date.
Unfortunately for Mötley Crüe, 2008 has arrived without the prospect of a finished movie. The production has been plagued with difficulties, and thus far, is without a viable script. Understandably disappointed with the slow progress, band spokesman Nikki Sixx voiced the band’s desire to secure a new studio partner to produce the film saying, “We need to find the right partner. They are not the right partner.” MTV Films/Paramount Pictures, and their parent company, Viacom Inc, have yet to comment publicly on the issue.
Even with the lengthy delay in production, the timing of Mötley Crüe’s disgruntlement may be suspect, however. Coincidentally, or perhaps not, the band will release their ninth studio album Saints of Los Angeles on Tuesday.
