Less than a month out from releasing her fourth studio album Puberty 2 on June 17, New York City based indie rocker Mitski just shared the video for “Happy,” the album’s second single. The “Happy” video portrays the dissolution of an apparently happy couple’s relationship, with a violent twist at the end. Squeamish viewers be warned: the final moments contain some gore.

“The nature of happiness is that it passes through and eventually leaves, and something else – sadness, anger, a low after the high – has to follow,” Mitski, who is not herself in the video, explains in a statement. “This song is about this exhaustive and exhausting cycle, and how sometimes one would rather not have any of it at all than be constantly thrown about by the waves of these fleeting states.”
The week following the release of Puberty 2, Mitksi will begin her North American summer tour with Japanese Breakfast and Jay Som, segueing into a European tour this fall. See tour dates here. Check out the video for “Happy” below.
