As Atlanta rapper Donnis’s DJ was getting set up onstage at Exit/In for their opening slot for Matt and Kim, my friend Jessica said to me, “Two laptops. Isn’t it amazing that that’s what music can be?” I agreed, because I also love being alive in this age where technology can expand what it means to be creative, though there will always be something more personal about live instrumentation. After Donnis’s set, Matt and Kim proved that in an hour that involved him seemingly doing gymnastics at his keyboard and her taking breaks to stand on top of her bass drum.
The upbeat vibe that the Brooklyn duo maintained throughout the night made me conclude that they are sponsored by Mountain Dew either because caffeine runs through their veins, or because their bodies are used to manufacture some sort of secret ingredient that promotes hyperactivity in teen skateboarders. Between Matt climbing on the venue’s rafters and Kim literally walking on the crowd, the duo played old favorites such as “Good Ol’ Fashion Nightmare” and “Yea Yeah” alongside tracks from their forthcoming third album. Advertised with printed balloons thrown into the audience, Sidewalks comes out November 2, and promises more of their trademark fast-paced indie pop.
