It’s no-holds-barred in Martha Wainwright’s sophomore album, I Know You’re Married But I’ve Got Feelings Too. The 14-track compilation oscillates between refreshed ‘80s pop (“You Cheated Me”) and the soulful ballad sounds of songs like “Heart’s Club Band,” whose sweet and gritty trumpet solo makes it one of Wainwright’s most memorable numbers to date. Saloon piano, unique percussion arrangements, and guests like brother Rufus, and Pete Townshend are a package of pleasant surprises, while the gem of the project, Wainwright’s inimitable voice, is no surprise at all. Married includes two covers, Pink Floyd’s “See Emily Play” and the Eurythmics’ “Love is a Stranger,” a funky ball of energy that makes you want to dance. The secret to this album is the balance between the eclectic production and Wainwright’s pipes; they don’t overpower one another. This indie songbird has a quite a bit to say, and I’m glad to hear it.
