John Robb, journalist and punk rock musician, has written a book covering the thirty-year history of Manchester, England’s music scene, due April 28. Titled “The North Will Rise Again: Manchester Music City 1978-2008,” it will feature the popular Manchester musical acts Oasis, the Smiths, Joy Division and the Stone Roses. In addition to features on these specific artists and discussions of Manchester’s various music genres, including punk, Madchester and Britpop, a term coined by Robb, the book will also feature personal contributions from Noel and Liam Gallagher (Oasis), Morrissey and Johnny Marr (the Smiths), Ian Brown (the Stone Roses) and Tony Wilson of Factory Records fame.
In discussing the extensiveness of his tome, Robb said, “I’ve spoken to just about everybody. In fact, the biggest problem has been keeping it all down to a manageable size. The book is around 155,000 words long as it is and it could have been double that.”
When not busy writing for magazines or working on his other upcoming book covering the 1980s British post-punk scene that he was involved in, Robb sings in the Manchester based punk band, Goldblade.
