Madonna Biopic No Longer In The Works

The new Madonna biopic is no longer.

The legendary pop star had planned to direct the biopic and even cast Ozark star Julia Garner in the lead role (as Madonna). But now it’s not happening, Madonna says.

The “Like A Prayer” singer announced last week that she’ll be heading out on a giant world tour to perform her hit songs. So, with that happening, Madonna tells Variety that her tour dates are the only thing on her mind at the moment.

While Madonna hopes to one day do a movie about her life, for now, it’s not the time. It is officially no longer in development at Universal.

Perhaps, though, the tour will spawn even more interest in the former star of the zeitgeist. Maybe many more fans will turn out for the biopic if and when it does happen. And whether or not Madonna is helming the project.

Previously, Madonna had said she wanted to direct the biopic so that “misogynistic men” won’t.

She told Variety, “I have a very long script that is really hard for me to make shorter. I’ve been whittling away at it, but it’s like hacking off my limbs. I’ve had an extraordinary life, I must make an extraordinary film. It was also a preemptive strike because a lot of people were trying to make movies about me. Mostly misogynistic men. So I put my foot in the door and said, ‘No one’s going to tell my story but me.’”

“I want to convey the incredible journey that life has taken me on as an artist, a musician, a dancer—a human being, trying to make her way in this world,” Madonna said of the biopic in a statement in 2020. 

“The focus of this film will always be music. Music has kept me going and art has kept me alive. There are so many untold and inspiring stories and who better to tell it than me? It’s essential to share the roller coaster ride of my life with my voice and vision.”

In terms of her tour, Madonna will commemorate her 40th anniversary with The Celebration Tour, which will kick off in late 2023.
