Lydia Loveless Flees From Hard Truths In New Song “Runaway”

Singer-songwriter Lydia Loveless gets raw and real on their latest track, “Runaway.” Released on Monday (July 24), the aching, piano-driven tune takes a hard look at the coping mechanisms we embrace when faced with unimaginable heartbreak.

“This was one of the very first songs I wrote for this record,” Loveless says in a statement. “I hated it, but my friend Amy was giving me assignments and pushing me to write my way through heartache while I was crashing on her couch. She would send me out with a notebook and tell me not to come back until I had something. Eventually, this one grew on me and is now actually my favorite to sing on the whole record.”

“Runaway” is Loveless’ second pre-release single from their upcoming studio album, Nothing’s Gonna Stand In My Way Again, due out September 22 via Bloodshot Records. The LP’s lead single, “Toothache,” is a sharp sonic contrast from her latest track’s sparse, intimate sound. Loveless says the feeling of vulnerability that lies at the heart of “Runaway” was siphoned from her own experiences.

“It’s deeply personal and gut-wrenching to perform,” Loveless adds. “It’s about not wanting my relationship to end but knowing things weren’t ever going to improve. I’m especially proud of the instrumentation, particularly the guitar part at the end that had everyone calling me Mark Knopfler when I came out of the booth.”

I’m trying to be brave / I’m wearing my game face / I don’t like to run / I just like to run away, they admit, baring their soul to the listener without apology or restraint.
