The most absolute of the absolute monarchs, Louis XIV of France was also the poster boy for debauchery, eventually dying of smallpox from an underage conquest when he was 64, after ruling France for 59 years. The modern soundtrack for all this timelessly horizontal, easy virtue is Louis XIV, the band and not “The Sun King.” Frantic frontman Jason Hill oozes enough testosterone to make the blood boil in all females within a 12-block radius as he sings about s-e-x. The band is tighter than a boa neck tie, plus Hill’s melodic histrionics are tuneful-no scream-o crap here. Think Ziggy Stardust meets Jane’s Addiction in Queens of the Stone Age’s garage. While the Richard Ramirez rhapsody, “Stalker,” is fairly disquieting, “Misguided Sheep” and “The Swarming of Bees” will have you rockin’ out. A solid effort, but their last one is even better.
