Hear Vic Chesnutt Covers From Dan Wilson And Haley Bonar

Earlier this month, Rock The Cause released Minnesota Remembers Vic Chesnutt, a tribute to the late singer-songwriter featuring Dan Wilson, Haley Bonar, David Simonett from Trampled By Turtles, Charlie Parr, Luke Redfield and more. Proceeds from the sale of the album will go to Sweet Relief Musicians Fund and other organizations that help musicians with disabilities. You can buy it here.

Take a listen to two of the tracks — Semisonic frontman (and Adele collaborator) Dan Wilson performs “Soft Picasso”, and Minneapolis’s own Haley Bonar sings “Gepetto,” — both from Chesnutt’s 1990 debut Little. These modern interpretations will surely delight any Chesnutt fan.

“I first learned about Vic Chesnutt from a friend of mine, a rabid fan,” notes Wilson. “My knowledge of VC’s music was limited to hearing West of Rome at various parties in the early nineties. But my friend patiently indoctrinated me into a broader awareness of his brilliance. I chose to record “Soft Picasso” because that same friend told me that it would suit my voice best, and he was right. I knew I couldn’t match the world-weary cynicism of VC’s version so I decided to go all the way in the other direction, in my direction. It’s such a funny song, I hope I’ve done it justice.”
