Stevie Wonder has released his first new single in nearly four years, a melodic, soulful pop ballad called “Can We Fix Our Nation’s Broken Heart.” As its title suggests, the song offers a plea for unity to the people of the U.S.

“Can We Fix Our Nation’s Broken Heart” is available now as a digital download and via streaming services.
The song features breezy harmonica solo by Wonder, who according to info posted on his YouTube channel, also contributed piano, bass, and percussion to the track. The tune also features a fluid acoustic guitar from Japanese musician Kay-Ta. Wonder co-wrote “Can We Fix Our Nation’s Broken Heart” with Mauli Bonner, a vocal director and screenplay writer.
Wonder’s message in his new song is clear, as he implores people to find common ground
“Can we fix our nation’s broken heart? / Are we brave enough to try?” he sings. “Can we fix our nation’s broken heart, and leave a better world behind? / ’Cause if we listen to different thoughts and point of views / All my brothers and sisters, we don’t have to lose humanity / We’re family.”
The single’s cover image is a black-and-white photo of Wonder his right hand across his heart. On his jacket is a red, heart-shaped brooch.
Wonder’s new single arrives shortly after his appearance at the Democratic National Convention in Chicago. Stevie performed his classic 1972 hit “Higher Ground” and gave a brief speech at the event.

Many of Wonder’s fans took to the comments section of his YouTube channel to share their feelings about his new song and its message.
“Stevie Wonder is the one we needed to remind us of the sense of joy and kindness that we need to rediscover at this polarized and divided time,” one fan wrote. “Let’s come back together and move on from the toxic, tribal mindset. We are all human beings, just trying to get along. Thank you, Stevie.”
Another commented, “To live to see the release of another Stevie Wonder single is one of life’s great joys.”

Wonder’s Other Recent Songs
“Can We Fix Our Nation’s Broken Heart” is Wonder’s first new solo music since he released a pair of singles in October 2020— “Where Is Our Love Song” and “Can’t Put It in the Hands of Fate.”
Stevie also has appeared as a guest on recordings by several artists during the past few years. Most recently, he was featured on a song called “What About the Children” from Gary Clark Jr.’s 2024 album, JPEG Raw. Wonder co-wrote the tune, and also contributed vocals, keyboards and harmonica to the track.
Wonder hasn’t released a full-length album of new songs since his 2005 studio effort A Time to Love.
