No matter where you stand on the musical front, you’ve got to have mad respect for a guy who can go from a punk rock burner at a South By Southwest house party to a seaside 1940s New Orleans-y jazz ballad. That’s John Dwyer though, the musical wunderkind behind SF garage heroes The Oh Sees.

On the latter, “Make You Kiss,” off the live DVD Thee Hounds Of Foggy Notion, bandmate Brigid Dawson even offers up the kind of perfectly-matched harmony vocals that you might find in one of Gillian Welch’s songs. On “I Need Seed,” the first song off Thee Oh Sees’ forthcoming Castlemania (In The Red, June 14), Dwyer sticks to his ’60s-infused garage rock guns. But then there’s that haunting, atonal Mellotron lying in the shadows that hints in all the directions Thee Oh Sees dare to tread. Thee band tours Europe in May and June.
