Led Zeppelin Documentary ‘Becoming Led Zeppelin’ Heading to IMAX Theaters in 2025

Consisting of Robert Plant, Jimmy Page, John Paul Jones, and John Bonham, Led Zeppelin released a total of nine albums throughout their short career in the music industry. Releasing their last album, Coda, in 1982, the band decided to go separate ways after Bonham passed away in 1980. Although not spending decades on the stage, the band sold nearly 300 million albums over the years. And with Led Zeppelin such an iconic band in rock music, it appears the new documentary Becoming Led Zeppelin will release in IMAX theaters in 2025.

Directed by Bernard MacMahon and written by Allison McGourty, the film followed the rise of Led Zeppelin and the massive popularity they gained in such a short time. With the world spiraling around them, the new documentary is the first film sanctioned by the band. Bringing together new footage with the band’s own words, there seemed no better place to see the legacy of Led Zeppelin than in IMAX.

Speaking about the advantages of IMAX, MacMahon said, “The cinematic power of IMAX paired with the film’s authentic sound creates an immersive and transportive viewing experience letting audiences feel like they are there, in the venues with the band.”

It Took Years To Bring ‘Becoming Led Zeppelin’ To Life

Even before cutting the cameras on, the production spent years trying to search for new footage and get the story together. McGourty recalled, “We spent five years flying back and forth across the Atlantic scouring attics and basements in pursuit of rare and unseen film footage, photographs and music recordings. Then we transferred each piece of media with custom techniques, so that in IMAX, these 55-year-old clips and music would look and sound like they came out of the lab yesterday.”

Seeing all their work come together and displayed in IMAX, the writer added, “We couldn’t be more excited to be partnering with IMAX and Sony Pictures Classics to bring this film to big screens for all audiences, Zeppelin fans, of course, but also all music lovers and anyone looking for an inspiring, uplifting story with amazing music.”
