Kid Cudi Scraps Upcoming Single after Fans Disapprove of Preview

For weeks now, Kid Cudi has been telling everyone that will listen that his new song is releasing on June 2. The song is expected to be the lead single for his next studio album, which is currently untitled and intended to drop at some point this year. But, after Cudi shared a snippet of the song on Friday (May 19) via TikTok, his fans’ excitement quickly turned to disgust.

Titled “The Chosen One,” the preview saw Cudi employ a dubstep-inspired approach, as he shouts Flex and Rage all throughout the chorus. Instead of fans showing enthusiasm about the track, Cudi received poor feedback, particularly on Twitter. This led to Cudi eventually canceling the June 2 release of “The Chosen One,” as he’s now expected to put out a different song on the same day.

“You guys are my fans, ur my family!!! I hear yall!!” he wrote in a tweet. “Im pivoting. Different single June 2nd!!”

It’s unclear at the moment which unreleased track the Cleveland rapper will deliver for his fans now on June 2, considering he has shared previews of several different songs in the last few months. One of the most prominent of these was “Solo Dolo IV” with Playboi Carti, which is not expected to land on the upcoming LP because Carti will not clear it for release.

However, Cudi has confirmed that the track list for his impending album will include feature appearances from Young Thug, who is currently fighting a federal racketeering case, and Travis Scott, who has a rich history of collaborations with Cudi. So, even with a disappointing sneak preview and the absence of a highly-anticipated Playboi Carti collaboration, Cudi’s project still has a lot of upsides.

In March, Cudi proclaimed that he would release the “album of the year,” welcoming high expectations. With that being said, as we are just a few days away from the start of his rollout for the LP, it will be interesting to see which track the 39-year-old uses to introduce his ninth studio album.
