NEW YORK, Sept. 29, 2016 — ASCAP, the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers, the world leader in performing rights and advocacy for music creators, today announced that global pop icon and singer-songwriter Katy Perry has renewed her agreement with the society. ASCAP will continue to license public performances of her successful songwriting catalog throughout the world.
“ASCAP was in my corner before anyone knew who I was,” said Perry. “That’s one of the many reasons I’m loyal to them. They’ve always believed in me and my music, and they’re great at supporting and protecting their members. ASCAP’s a vital part of my team.”
With well over 100 million records sold globally, Katy Perry is one of the most successful radio and recording artists of all time. Her #1 2008 single “I Kissed a Girl” began an unstoppable streak of global hits, including milestones like Teenage Dream, the first album by a female artist to yield five #1 Billboard Hot 100 singles – “California Gurls,” “Teenage Dream,” “Firework,” “E.T.” and “Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F.)” – all co-written by Perry. In total, Perry has accumulated nine #1 singles on the Billboard Hot 100, most recently “Dark Horse” from her double-platinum third album, PRISM. Perry’s performance at the 2015 Super Bowl Halftime Show set a Guinness World Record for the most watched halftime show in Super Bowl history. Most recently, NBC featured Perry’s newest single “Rise” throughout its coverage of the Rio Olympics.
“Katy Perry has entertained and empowered millions of fans around the world with her brilliant music,” said ASCAP CEO Elizabeth Matthews. “ASCAP is thrilled to begin a new chapter in our long, enduring relationship with Katy, who is beloved by radio and streaming listeners everywhere and one of the great songwriter-artists of our time.”
2016 marks the 10-year anniversary of Katy Perry’s membership with ASCAP. Perry played an ASCAP SXSW acoustic showcase in 2008, months before the release of her breakthrough album One of the Boys, and gave a keynote interview at the 2013 ASCAP “I Create Music” EXPO.
