Brash, experimentally produced hip-hop music from artists like JPEGMAFIA, Danny Brown, Injury Reserve, Death Grips and others have been accused of appealing too much to male-centric audiences.

With raunchy, abrasive lyrics and vocals, a common criticism these musicians have endured is that their music “scares the hoes.” When they decided to join forces for a collaborative album, JPEGMAFIA and Brown aimed to specifically turn the insult on its head.
On Tuesday (March 21), Peggy and Danny released the second promotional single and title track for SCARING THE HOES, VOL. 1, set to release later in the week on March 24. Introduced by incessant clapping contrasted by a smooth saxophone, “SCARING THE HOES” sees the pair employ irony with perfection. Bringing in smashing drums for the majority of the track, the newly-formed tandem surely achieves what they set out to do.
Stop scarin’ the hoes
Play that shit that’ll have them touch they toes
“We don’t wanna hear that weird shit no more”
“What the fuck is that? Give me back my aux cord”
Over seemingly intentionally rough instrumentation that feels like an acquired taste, Brown’s verses that sandwich between JPEG’s Stop scarin’ the hoes hook, displayed above, continue the joke. Delivering bars about rap music being more about money than the pursuit of art nowadays, Brown unapologetically holds a mirror up to modern hip-hop’s complacency and ill-fitting philosophies.
It seems with this upcoming album, JPEGMAFIA and Brown are looking to keep embracing their rugged styles. Ahead of this latest cut’s release, the duo put out the lead single “Lean Beef Patty” on March 13.
It has been about a year-and-a-half since JPEGMAFIA dropped a full-length project, and three-and-a-half since Danny Brown did so. But, STH looks to be a jumpstart to a great year for both, as Peggy will transition to releasing even more solo efforts in 2023 following the joint LP.
