Jenn Lindsay
Prospect Hearts
(No Evil Star Records)
Rating: 3 out of 5 stars

When a songwriter tries to promote social change, their music can come from a place of cynicism, angst, and rejection. Or, it can come from a place of triumph. With Jenn Lindsay’s ninth studio album, Prospect Hearts, it’s clear she’s shifting her perspective from that of a wounded outsider to an inspiring supporter. With songs like “You Do You” and “The Book of John,” she uses her sharply-honed skills and years of life experience in New York City to illustrate the ironies and hypocrisies of life. For fans of stripped down singer-songwriters like Kimya Dawson, Lindsay offers a unique perspective on society, morality, sexuality, and relationships. If this record is any indication, it’s clear there’s more to come from this insightful New Yorker.
