With a slow, sleepy delivery, Wallflowers’ frontman Jakob Dylan wanders into the realm of an acoustic guitar and minimal instrumentation for an album that’s innocent and charming in its simplicity. “Something Good This Way Comes” is the gently shuffling, sun-splashed bit of pastorality that gives local fairs, bon fires and first kisses an almost narcotic pull. The hushed nature and friendly voice belies the deeper under-current to Dylan’s first true singer/songwriter outing. Seemingly informed by the war and global unrest, “Evil Is Alive and Well” is fraught with coiled snake tension and the tugging sense that there’s more than just a song going on here. That dread and awareness permeates most of the songs, but also create a sense of reality that can be lived with. “Everybody Pays As They Go” and “This End of The Telescope” provide how it is, the bumps and the faded glory that is what life is made of.
