The Indigo Girls (Justin Vernon’s favorite band) reminisce about the past and worry about the future on their fourteenth studio album, Beauty Queen Sister. Due out October 4 on the duo’s own IG Recordings/Vanguard Records, the 13 tracks were recorded in Nashville with Peter Collins, who produced Indigo Girls’ ’92 and ’94 albums Rites of Passage and Swamp Ophelia.
Amy Ray and Emily Saliers brought in a slew of talent for the record. Singer/songwriter Lucy Wainwright Roche lends vocals on “War Rugs,” as do The Shadowboxers on “We Get To Feel It All.” Saliers says the group took an “organic approach” on the album and owes part of its success to the contributing artists, including Brady Blade on drums and bass from Frank Swart and Viktor Krauss.
“Many of our players are top-notch Nashville talent—you just don’t get any better than that,” she says.
