The world of country music currently has the strictest and most rigid dichotomy it has ever seen. To say the least, there has been a vast amount of controversy surrounding this split and you know exactly what we are talking about. Well, the conflict has been perpetuated, as Oliver Anthony recently laid it all out there with his recent comments about Nashville’s music business. In short, there is now country and Americana music.

In totality, Anthony just further solidified the musical split currently transpiring in country music. That being so, there are seemingly two types of country music listeners. So, if you fall under Oliver Anthony’s umbrella we got you covered. Here are three current roots Americana musicians residing in country music’s more traditional side.
The Mountain Grass Unit
Hailing from Birmingham, Alabama, MGU is a bluegrass band that is simply an incredible group of musicians. The three-piece band consists of Drury Anderson (mandolin and vocals), Luke Black (acoustic guitar and banjo), and Sam Wilson (upright bass). They might be young, but play like seasoned veterans.
Some of their more notable songs include “Jericho,” “Shoot the Gun,” and “Lonesome Dove.” If you are a fan of folks such as Tony Rice, The Steeldrivers, or other bluegrass bands, then you must check out these young Americana bluegrass pickers.
Coleman Jennings & The Roaddogs
Willie Nelson and The Allman Brothers are just a few of the acts Coleman Jennings & The Roaddogs resemble. That being so, they’re good and they’re good in a delightful fusion of nostalgia and originality.
The four-piece Austin, Texas-based band is a culmination of Americana music’s greatest genre influences. With songs such as “Caroline” and “Head-Spinnin,” one can marvel at the group’s rebellious Americana ambition rivaling the prototypical Nashville status quo.
The Kitchen Dwellers
For some, though it should be for many, bluegrass is back. Thanks to acts like Billy Strings and Sierra Ferrell, acts like The Kitchen Dwellers can release songs that fall under the criminally underrated genre. The four-piece band is a delightful mixture of The Grateful Dead and Old Crow Medicine Show, as they are a true jam bluegrass Americana band.
For a proper introduction, one should check out their songs “Gypsy,” “The Crown,” and “Visions of Mohr.” It’s a transcendent listening experience and reminds you that intricate and poignant music is created by dreams and instruments. Not, well, you know…
