I Love Math contains members of not yet mainstream nevertheless beloved Texas groups Old 97’s, The Deathray Davies and The Paperchase, and, as their name and debut Getting to the Point is Beside It demonstrate, Texans can not always resist whimsy. Despite slightly regressing emotionally on this record (namely the vocals of singer John Dufilho, whose tone ranges from Elliott Smith to Plain White T’s), Point nevertheless was recorded by a talented team of longhorns, three of whom play drums in their other bands. And so beats (the band’s Math-medium) provide prime traction for simple-pleasure organ riffs (“This Is Something I Might Miss”), steel-pedal mastery (“Some Bridges Are for Burning”) and hearty acoustic rhythms (“The Shape of the Sum”).
