As one of the most prominent power couples in the Nashville scene, it’s safe to assume that Amy Grant and Vince Gill would have found each other no matter what different decisions either musician might have made in the past. And as is so often the case with true love, seemingly inconsequential decisions can sometimes be the most significant in building a relationship.

For example, one such decision Gill made about what to wear to the golf course with Grant helped seal the deal for the “Queen of Christian Pop.”
The Fashion Choice That Helped Amy Grant Fall For Vince Gill
Despite the drama surrounding Amy Grant and Vince Gill’s budding relationship in the 1990s (both musicians were married to other people at the time), the musical power couple has proven in the decades since that their love is long-lasting. In a November 2024 interview with USA Today, Grant revealed a hilarious memory she had of her future husband.
“I don’t think I’ve even told you this,” Grant began, with Gill lightheartedly replying, “Oh, no.” Grant continued, “We were doing something with George and Barbara Bush. I think it was some golf thing. And I remember showing up, I barely knew you, and I thought, ‘He is such a handsome man. Why does he have on that hat?’ I found that very fascinating and intriguing.”
Given Gill’s humble approach to just about everything in life, fashion included, it’s pretty laughable to imagine him picking out a hat to wear for his day on the green with the President and First Lady of the United States. If we had to guess, he picked the hat, not knowing he would draw the attention of his future wife…even if that reaction was one of curious intrigue, not admiration.
Of Course, Music Played An Even Larger Role In Their Relationship
“Fascinating” golf course attire aside, it’s no surprise that Vince Gill and Amy Grant’s relationship started in the musical sense. Over a 2.5-week period between Thanksgiving and Christmas of 1993, the two musicians worked on multiple collaborations that planted the seed for the romantic relationship to come. “Vince asked me to be on a TV show with Michael McDonald and Chet Atkins, and I’d promised the Nashville Symphony I’d do a benefit for them,” Grant recalled in her 2024 interview with USA Today.
“So, I said, ‘I’ll do your show, will you do my live thing?’ It was the first time I’d ever heard him live,” she continued. “I had one of his records, but I went, ‘Oh my gosh, he can sing anything.’ Between those two shows, I was working on [“House of Love”], and I said, ‘Hey, we’re already working together, will you come sing on my record?’ It was really bam, bam, bam. Those three things in 2.5 weeks set us on a path of knowing each other, loving working together, really a magical friendship. Everything about him was familiar to me.”
In a 2003 interview with ABC News, Grant said that she believed she fell in love with Gill while they filmed the music video for “House of Love.” “I was so moved by him as a human being that I went up behind him and just hugged him as hard as I could while he was singing. I just said, ‘I just needed to hug you all night.’” The couple tied the knot in 2000 and have been making music with one another ever since. Although, we’re unsure of what happened to that fateful and “fascinating” hat Gill wore to the golf course that won over Grant.
