I Didn’t Expect Cody Johnson to Make Me Order an Extra Large Box of Tissues Today, But Here We Are

Friday isn’t just my favorite day of the week because the weekend starts when I clock out. Every week brings a stack of new albums and songs to spin. You never know when you’ll find your new favorite song, album, or artist in the list of new releases. Then, there are days like today when you underestimate the amount of tissues you’ll need to make it through the day. Thanks to Cody Johnson, I’m putting in an order for the biggest box of Kleenex my local supermarket carries.

Today (November 1), Johnson released the deluxe edition of his 2023 album Leather. Almost a year to the day after releasing the original record, the Texas native dropped thirteen new tracks. Overall, it’s a solid release but he forced me to turn on the waterworks about halfway through the new collection with “C’mon Cowgirl.” Written by Aby Gutierrez, Adam James, and Johnathan Stark, the song is an emotional hammer for parents in general and dads of daughters in particular.

While Johnson didn’t write the song, he’s in the process of living it. He has two young daughters. So, he knew what he was doing when he recorded the track. My “little” girl is grown and has a little one of her own. As a result, this song hit me right in the feelings, as the young people are so fond of saying.

Cody Johnson Encapsulates the Experience of Being a Dad in 3 Minutes

With “C’mon Cowgirl,” Cody Johnson walks listeners through many of the major milestones of parenthood. It starts with the first day of school and moves forward from there. The second verse opens with one of the most terrifying moments of any parent’s life. So c’mon cowgirl, you’re too young to drive. / I don’t care what that license says you best be home by nine. Then, he sings about watching your kid experience their first heartbreak. C’mon, cowgirl, turn that sad song off. / I never liked him anyway, baby, it’s his loss.

For me, though, the heaviest line of the song comes in the third verse. C’mon cowgirl, this ultrasound looks great. Nothing brings as much fear or as much joy to a parent as watching your kids become parents.

In short, Cody Johnson put parental tear-jerker in his new collection. You have been warned.
