American Idol alum HunterGirl is back with a new track, “Ain’t About You.” The song is self-written by the Tennessee native with lyrics that urge her audience to follow their dreams in the same way she has.

What if there’s a heart who needs some hope / And finds it in the words that you almost never wrote / So before you say you’re not good enough / That all your dreams are wishing dust / You call it quits, walk away, and say you’re through / What if it ain’t about you, she sings in this poignant offering.
“If there’s anybody out there right now thinking about giving up on a dream or something they love, I hope they listen to this song and think twice about it,” says HunterGirl in a statement. “We’re all here to do something special.”
The song was written prior to HunterGirl’s Idol run. After a tearful “45-minute conversation with Jesus,” the singer let the song flow out of her with unbridled honesty. It wasn’t until she shared the song with fellow Idol alumni Chayce Beckham and Noah Thompson, following her time on the show, that she felt ready to release the song.

“Ain’t About You” follows the release of her duet with Noah Thompson, “One Day Tonight,” and “Lonely Outta You.” The latter was inspired by her run on Idol—particularly seeing other male contestants struggle with being vulnerable.
“When you’re on Idol, you have to talk about your emotions and your story,” HunterGirl told American Songwriter. “A lot of the guys said, ‘How are you showing your emotions on TV? I get nervous opening up.’ That’s when I got the idea.
“There are so many songs from guys that say things like ‘you’re a lonely girl’ and I couldn’t think of any songs from girls talking about them being lonely,” she continued.
