In 2023, the American Music Awards did not air for the first time in nearly half a century. Now the awards ceremony is taking another year off, returning in May 2025. However, CBS and Dick Clark Productions will present the American Music Awards 50th Anniversary Special tonight (Sunday, Oct. 6.) Here’s how you can tune in to see Jennifer Hudson honor the late Whitney Houston, plus other memorable performances.

Where Can I Watch the American Music Awards 50th Anniversary Special?
The American Music Awards 50th Anniversary Special will air live on CBS Sunday (Oct. 6) at 8 p.m. Eastern. If you have a Paramount+ subscription with a Showtime add-on, you can livestream the event on Paramount+.
You can also watch the show on any live TV streaming service that carries CBS, including Hulu + Live TV, DirecTV Stream and Fubo.
Who Is Performing?
The American Music Awards 50th Anniversary Special will take viewers on a trip through the ceremony’s history. A diverse list of artists are set to perform, including Nelly, Brad Paisley, Chaka Khan and Sheila E, Gladys Knight, Green Day, Nile Rodgers & Chic, Jennifer Hudson, Kane Brown, Mariah Carey, Raye and Stray Kids.
EGOT winner Jennifer Hudson will pay tribute to 22-time AMA winner Whitney Houston, who died in 2012.
Additionally, Gladys Knight will return to the stage for an encore performance of “Midnight Train to Georgia.” The “Empress of Soul” performed the song at the very first AMAs in 1974.
Paisley will honor the late Charley Pride, who won the first AMA for male country artist and country album. He will also perform his new single “Truck Still Works,” which he debuted at the 2024 People’s Choice Country Music Awards.
Carrie Underwood, Gloria Estefan and Jennifer Lopez will also make special appearances, along with five-time AMA host Jimmy Kimmel.

When Will The AMAs Be Back?
The American Music Awards ceremony last aired in 2022, with Taylor Swift dominating. The “Anti-Hero” singer won all six awards she was up for. It will return in May 2025.
Dick Clark created the AMAs in 1973 to compete with the GRAMMY Awards after ABC’s contract to air the latter expired. While nominations are based on commercial performance, fan voting now determines the winners.
