Singer-songwriter Arum Rae will release her unplugged album Sub Rosa on May 19 via Secret Road Records.
Sub Rosa — Latin for “under the rose” or “what happens in secret” — is an intimate ten-song collection that features acoustic versions of previously released songs, as well as tracks from her forthcoming studio album which is slated for a fall release.
“Sub Rosa is a collection of past, present and future songs in what I consider to be their extra-pure forms,” Rae says. “Some I recorded at home here in Manhattan and some at my friend’s studio in Brooklyn. Peeling back the layers for the sake of intimacy … an act that is usually the fast track to heartache, but in this case, a dare in the midst of transition to propel forward.”
The bare-bones production lends itself well to these songs, and helps showcase a vocal timbre reminiscent of Amy Winehouse at her most poignant.
Below, stream “Should I” and be on the lookout for Sub Rosa on May 19.
