Cults came quickly, but they seem to be sticking around. Just another mysterious, ’60s girl-group channeling Brooklyn band? They surprised a lot of people when they signed to the venerable Columbia Records label after having been on the scene for barely a minute. But, Madeline Follin and Brian Oblivion have a lot of musical mojo between them. Follin’s brother Richie plays in Cults and also fronts the excellent Guards, and the connections to MGMT go beyond just Columbia (does that Korg Mono/Poly synth on “You Know What I Mean” and “Wanted Man” remind anyone else of “Electric Feel”?) Cults toured with Best Coast last fall, but with their debut, self-titled album coming in just a few weeks, they won’t be the support act any longer. Listen to Cults, which drops June 5 on Columbia, at NPR.
