In the age of digital media, creative minds have been finding creative ways to recycle older forms of music storage. Many reincarnations have been fashioned into easy-to-make everyday objects – records can be turned into decorative bowls, a stack of CDs can be used to make a funky lamp. Taking this trend to the next level, Flickr user iri5 gives cassette tapes a second life as materials to make stunning portraits of rock icons. Titled “Ghost in the Machine,” the project includes intricate likenesses of Jimi Hendrix, Bob Dylan, Jim Morrison and the Beatles. The artist describes the inspiration of the collection: “The idea comes from a philosopher’s description of how your spirit lives in your body. I imagine we are all, like cassettes, thoughts wrapped up in awkward packaging.”
