Before forming their own band, Jamie Dailey and Darrin Vincent paid the bills as session musicians, lending their fleet-fingered solos and high-lonesome harmonies to albums by bluegrass icons like Ricky Skaggs. On Brothers of the Highway, their fifth album as a duo, the two prove that they’re more than capable of occupying the spotlight on their own. The Louvin Brothers and the Delmores carved out a similarly rootsy sound several decades ago, but Dailey & Vincent inject some modern-day appeal into their music, too, covering songs by Vince Gill one minute and edging closer to a revitalized folk-country hybrid the next.
“We spent a lot of time writing and selecting songs for our new album Brothers of the Highway,” Dailey tells American Songwriter. “This is such a unique and special process. We are absolutely delighted with the outcome. To me, the most sentimental song on the project is a song I wrote called ‘Back to Jackson County.’ It reflects on my childhood and how I grew up. It brings back wonderful memories for me every time I sing it.”
“From the very beginning of this process, Jamie and I set out to make the very best bluegrass album we could make,” adds Vincent. “The outcome exceeds our expectations. We are excited to finally be able to share Brothers Of The Highway with all of our amazing fans! Personally, ‘Steel Drvin’ Man’ isone of my favorite songs from the album to play. Its fast, fun, and it is always a highlight in the show.”
Brothers of the Highway, which doubles as the group’s Rounder Records debut, hits the street on May 28.
