Foxes In Fiction

Foxes In Fiction is Warren Hildebrand, a precocious – at 21 years of age – Bradford Cox acolyte who creates diaphanous, lo-fi pop music in his bedroom in Toronto. He’s been busy over the last year – running a record label and putting out several records. The EP Alberto comes from Orchid Tapes, a cassettes-only label that Hildrebrand founded, while Moongadget, a Brooklyn label, re-released the full-length Swung From The Branches in 2010. On the EP’s opener, “Bathhurst,” a cheap drum machine chucks along at a quick pace, while springy synths and guitars fill out the song’s echoey space. Hildebrand’s loop-based production is catchy and fun, even if it sounds a bit like the rest of the bedroom pop of late. On “School Night” and “Sadiya,” Hildebrand gets his Bradford Cox-ism perfect, and it wouldn’t be hard to mistake either song for an outtake from Halcyon Digest. In the liner notes, Hildebrand reveals that “Borders” was written and recorded via email with Alberto Hernandez, who also seems to serve as Alberto‘s chief inspiration (and to whom the album is dedicated). If Hernandez and Hildebrand can create a work as accomplished as “Borders” using just electronic mail, it will be interesting to see what else they can come up with for the Internet.
