(Freelance Whales)
This weekend’s Governors Ball festival in New York boasts an impressive line-up, boasting a headlining set from Passion Pit on Saturday. On Sunday, Beck takes the main spot with his first NYC show in four years. High-profile acts like Fiona Apple, Santigold, Chromeo, Devendra Banhart, and Built To Spill are also set to perform. If you’re planning on going, here are four acts worth showing up early for.
Governors Ball will take place on Randall’s Island. Single day tickets are still available.
K.Flay
K.Flay may not be the most written-about white female rapper on the internet, but it’s probably better if her every move doesn’t get turned into a “but what does it really mean?” discussion. She’s allowed to be good at what she does, with honest, culturally-relevant rhymes and beats that sample acts like the XX and Warpaint.
Turf War
There’s no shortage of music coming from Georgia, and Atlanta garage rockers Turf War are the latest to emerge. They have a song called “Summertime Booze,” which seems like a fairly effective selling point.
The Jezabels
Hailing from Australia, The Jezabels released their debut album Prisoner last year after earning buzz for their previous EPs. The quartet makes moody, atmospheric indie rock that clearly showcases the vocals of frontwoman Hayley Mary.
Freelance Whales
Sure, Freelance Whales have been around, having released their debut album Weathervanes in 2010 on Mom + Pop/Frenchkiss. But it’s been a while since we’ve heard from them, so hopefully they’ll be charming us all over again with their pleasant brand of indie pop.
