Tonight’s “Hope for Haiti Now: A Global Benefit for Earthquake Relief” telethon, organized by actor George Clooney, will air at 8 p.m. ET/PT. The show, which will be broadcast on VH1, MTV, CNN, NBC, and numerous other networks, will feature a lineup of artists that includes U2, Bruce Springsteen, Coldplay, Taylor Swift, Kid Rock, Sheryl Crow, and many more. Collaborations, covers, and surprises are the order of the night.
Says show producer Joe Gillen, “This is a way for them to express themselves through song, many of which are songs that they didn’t even write or that they never even recorded. It’s a special performance of a song that they love, that really reflects the emotion of their feeling that hopefully will be an impactful performance that will entice people, motivate people to want to help and contribute.”
U2 and Jay-Z are set to perform their new song written for the occasion, “Stranded.”
Fiona Apple and Radiohead, who are not currently scheduled to appear on the telethon, are doing their parts to help out. Apple will take part in a benefit concert at L.A.’s premier singer-songwriter venue, Largo, alongside Jon Brion and Tom Brosseau.
Radiohead will also emerge from hibernation, playing a special gig January 24 at Los Angeles’ Music Box theater. Tickets are currently being auctioned off at radiohead.com, and all proceeds from the show will benefit the Oxfam Haiti relief fund. “We’re trying to raise as much money as possible, so tickets will be sold by auction at this site from 8pm tonight until 11am Saturday (PST),” drummer Phil Selway wrote on the band’s website yesterday.
