Fans Compare Willie Nelson’s New Beck Cover to Johnny Cash’s “Hurt”, and I Can’t Unhear It

Currently 91 years old, Willie Nelson watched as his love for country music transformed him from a singer to a music icon. Since stepping on stage for the first time during the 1950s, the singer showcased his fascination with singing and songwriting by releasing over 70 studio albums. Throughout the decades, Nelson also received the chance to collaborate with other legendary singers like Kris Kristofferson, Waylon Jennings, and even Johnny Cash. And not letting his age hold him back, the singer continues to record with his newest album, Last Leaf on the Tree. With Nelson promoting the new album, he decided to release his cover of Beck’s “Lost Cause.”

With Nelson’s son, Micah, working alongside his father on the new album as a producer, he hinted that Last Leaf on The Tree focused on both life and death. He explained, “There are little side-quests, but that became the through-line — facing death with grace.” While Nelson knows that death is a part of life, he decided to use his thoughts surrounding the end to help influence his new album. And when discussing such topics, Beck’s “Lost Cause” seemed like the perfect song.

Fans Compare Willie Nelson Singing “Lost Cause” To Johnny Cash’s “Hurt”

Already gaining over 28,000 likes, fans barely contained their excitement over listening to new music from Nelson, even if it was a cover. Looking at the comments, they included, “This is reminiscent of when Johnny Cash did hurt. I love you really. I can’t remember a day of my life that I didn’t know who you were. When I listen to your music it reminds me of my dad. Thank you so much.” Another person added, “So thankful that Willie has been here on this journey we call life, He sure has gotten me through some tough times! Thank you Willie Nelson! “Long may you run!”

Outside of the studio, Nelson recently took the stage in Houston, Texas for a special performance supporting presidential candidate Kamala Harris. Receiving a warm welcome, the country legend decided to entertain the crowd with songs like “On the Road Again” and “Mammas Don’t Let Your Babies Grow Up to Be Cowboys.” As for his newest album, Last Leaf on the Tree is expected to release on November 1st.
