The Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade gives fans across the United States a laundry list of reasons to tune in every year. The floats, balloons, marching bands, and dance teams are cornerstones of the annual event. However, the yearly parade wouldn’t be the same without its lineup of top-tier performances. Every year, various artists board floats to perform hit songs or holiday classics for the audience. This year was no different. However, fans weren’t so thrilled when they realized the performers were lip-synching.

Angry Viewers React to Lip-Synching During the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade
Viewers took to Twitter to share their thoughts on lip-synching performers less than an hour and only two performances into the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. Billy Porter kicked things off and one viewer was quick to call him out.
“IF one is going to lip-synch on such a HUGE platform (i.e. The Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade), you might want to actually LEARN YOUR WORDS!” they tweeted, tagging Porter in the post. “That was HORRID,” they added.
Some viewers had a better sense of humor about it. “Ah yes, the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. Where we learn who the worst lip-synching celebrities are that year,” one viewer tweeted.
The cast of Hell’s Kitchen delivered the second performance of the event. “This is the word lip-synching I’ve ever seen? You have a Tony and an Emmy, C’mon Baby!!” one viewer tweeted about the outing. “I love this arrangement though,” they added.
One viewer was just curious. “Is lip-synching required at the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade?” they tweeted. As a matter of fact, it is. Here’s why.
Why Performers Can’t Sing Live During the Parade
While we can all admit that lip-synching is kind of lame, there’s a reason that all performers do so during the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. The conditions under which they’re working make it almost impossible to deliver a good live performance. First, there’s the screaming crowd lining the parade route. Then, there’s the possibility of wind or other weather conditions that could interfere with their performance. On top of that, many of them are performing from the backs of giant parade floats, the noise of which would likely bleed into their microphones if they were live.
In short, performers lip-synch during the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade to ensure that those gathered on the parade route and those watching at home get the best show possible.
