Fall Out Boy Tribute Sinéad O’Connor with “Nothing Compares 2 U”

Fall Out Boy is among the many artists paying tribute to Sinéad O’Connor in the wake of her death on July 26. At the band’s show in Atlanta, Georgia, at Lakewood Ampitheatre, Fall Out Boy offered a poignant tribute to her with a cover of her biggest hit, “Nothing Compares 2 U.”

Taking to the stage solo, frontman Patrick Strump was seated at the piano as he sang the heartbreaking opening lyrics, It’s been seven hours and 15 days/Since you took your love away/I go out every night and sleep all day/Since you took your love away. A hush fell over the crowd as he played, with the exception of bursts of gentle cheers and applause.

Pink and Brandi Carlile also paid tribute to O’Connor with a cover of “Nothing Compares 2 U” during the opening night of Pink’s Summer Carnival tour. Cyndi Lauper, Slash and Regina Schock of The Go-Go’s were among the countless other artists who’ve honored O’Connor’s memory.

Originally written and recorded by Prince, “Nothing Compares 2 U” was later recorded and released by O’Connor in 1990 as the second single off her sophomore album, I Do Not Want What I Haven’t Got. Her interpretation was a global hit, reaching No. 1 in multiple countries, including the Billboard Hot 100 and Alternative Airplay chart in the U.S. It became her signature hit and was nominated for three Grammy Awards.

Police found O’Connor at her home in London unresponsive, and don’t suspect foul play. “It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved Sinéad,” the 56-year-old’s family confirmed in a statement. “Her family and friends are devastated and have requested privacy at this very difficult time.” O’Connor’s death was preceded by another tragedy when her teenage son Shane took his life in January 2022.

Prior to her death, the singer was allegedly working on a new album that would have been her first in almost a decade.
