Country artist-on-the-rise Brandon Davis is both good guy and gunslinger, both saint and sinner, both “Jesus and Jesse James” in his new single.

Premiering exclusively with American Songwriter (March 31), the title track of his forthcoming EP Jesus and Jesse James finds Davis exploring his good and his gritty sides, grappling with what’s perceived as right and wrong in the name of authenticity.

“The story behind this song is actually pretty unique,” Davis shares with American Songwriter, explaining how the song found him during a co-write at the Songtown USA songwriter’s clinic. “This clinic allowed me to work with a bunch of aspiring songwriters who were able to directly pitch me a chorus to a song that they’d then get to write with me as part of the course. ‘Jesus and Jesse James’ was the song that immediately stood out to me and I was hooked on the idea.”

Echoing vicious strums, haunting steel, and the artist’s blistering baritone, “Jesus and Jesse James” was a song that instantly spoke to Davis on a deep level. “As a dad, this song hits hard for sure,” he says. “It’s my job to teach my children to make good choices but also my job to make sure they stick together and protect one another at the end of the day. I think that’s where Jesse James comes in… being ready to fiercely protect those you love no matter what.”

The forthcoming EP on which the song appears is a project Davis describes as containing some of his most honest and raw material.

“This entire EP is filled with a stripped-back country sound that brings back memories of the kind of country I grew up listening to,” he details. “The main theme behind this EP is just the storytelling it holds and how unique each song is. I wanted to make sure there’s something for everybody no matter what phase of life they’re in. The songs take you on a personal journey that hopefully makes you feel like it was written just for you.”
