Exclusive: Mason Ramsey Talk the Meaning Behind “Blue Over You” –and Performing It With Lana Del Rey
There was a time, there was magic in the air
In my mind, there are memories everywhere of you and me together
I thought it would last forever
There was a time, oh, there was a time
Ramsey first rose to fame after his cover of Hank Williams’ “Lovesick Blues” went viral online. Nowadays, he’s proving he is an artist in his own right. “Blue Over You” is a strong testament to that claim.
Ramsey gets candid on this somber track. He wallows in a heartbreak with the kind of sentimentality that music fans likely thought was long gone. He evokes the spirit of many classic country artists that came before him, doing them proud with his syrupy vocals.
“My producer had this idea at the time,” Ramsey tells American Songwriter of “Blue Over You.” “It was supposed to be a happy song, but I wanted to make a sad song. I had a heartbreak happening. The song was written over a girl that I had feelings for, but she didn’t feel the same about me.”
That unrequited love is readily apparent in Ramsey’s performance. Find a selection of the lyrics to “Blue Over You,” below.
I lost you, thought I had you but you were never really mine
So I’m crying, yeah, I’m dying, you’re not next to me tonight
If I could get that close, oh, heaven only knows
I wouldn’t be blue over you
Blue over you
Ramsey recently performed this track with Lana Del Rey at her packed headlining show at Fenway Park. Both artists have old souls. Though we likely wouldn’t have guessed Ramsey and Del Rey would be duetting together, the mix of their voices makes us wonder why it didn’t happen sooner.
“She’s the sweetest celebrity that I’ve ever met,” Ramsey says of Del Rey. “She’s very down to earth–very relaxed. She talks like she’s known you forever.”
“It was magical,” Ramsey says of performing the track at Fenway Park. “I got chills singing the song myself, truthfully.”
