Three months ago—and one week before her new album hummingbird came out—Carly Pearce revealed she was suffering from Pericarditis, an irritation of the tissue surrounding the heart.
Her health issue forced Pearce to pump the brakes during what would typically be one of the busiest times of her career. She was part of Tim McGraw’s Standing Room Only Tour and was at the peak of album promotion. Pearce had to closely monitor her physical activity and play some of her shows sitting down.
Pearce recently told American Songwriter that she’d dealt with Pericarditis several times throughout her life but that she’s doing much better.
“It was hard to be on medication,” she said. “My body didn’t like it, and I still wanted to remain touring. But I will say everybody was so gracious to me. There was a time where I wasn’t able to really walk around on stage.”

Carly Pearce: “It Was Hard To Be On Medication”
Pearce said she’s learned that if you’re honest and transparent with people, they will “love you back.”
“They just want you to be honest, and I didn’t want to hide,” she said.
Pearce’s album hummingbird took flight on June 7 and is home to her Top 5 Chris Stapleton duet “we don’t fight anymore” along with her new single “truck on fire.” Pearce delivered a bluegrass-inspired version of the album’s title track last week at the 17th ACM Honors. Pearce also co-hosted the event with fellow country singer Jordan Davis.
“I love getting to host,” Pearce said. “Hosting is something I’ve always wanted to do, but I think this event in particular really inspires me every year. There are always different artists and collaborators who are being celebrated.”
The 17th ACM Honors recognized Walt Aldridge, Tony Brown, Luke Bryan, Alan Jackson, Shannon Sanders, Lainey Wilson, and Trisha Yearwood. Performers included Eric Church, Terri Clark, Tyler Hubbard, Vince Gill with Ashley McBryde and Jamey Johnson.
Fans can watch Pearce host and perform when the 17th ACM Honors airs on Tuesday, Sept. 24 at 9 p.m. ET on Merit Street.
