With only four episodes completed and without a set broadcast schedule, Elvis Costello’s new variety show has already managed to secure a broad list of musical talent to perform, including many icons. The one-hour show, tentatively titled Spectacle: Elvis Costello With…, will feature Costello interviewing, as well as performing with, his guests. Some of the bigger names associated with Costello’s show include Tony Bennett, Lou Reed and former President Bill Clinton. Rumors are also circulating that Elton John, a confirmed show guest, appears in one of the completed episodes. In addition to these bigger name artists, the show’s 13-episode season will feature Davey Faragher, Pete Thomas and Steve Nieve of the Imposters, Costello’s current backing band, as well as Elvis Presley’s guitarist, James Burton; Allen Toussaint who recorded The River in Reverse with Costello in 2006; and jazz guitarist Pat Metheny.
With several shows now finished, Costello says that the project has been “a wonderful and surprising experience.” In addition, he expresses his hope “that future shows continue to embody the great joy, passion, and celebration of music we’ve had thus far.”
When Spectacle finally makes its debut, it will likely be an international broadcast since U.S. cable channel Sundance, Canadian Television Network, and Channel 4 in the U.K. are currently co-managing program production.
