Though Elf Power seem to have been somewhat overlooked since the dissolution of the reputable Elephant Six label that birthed them in the mid-90s, the Atlanta, Ga., sextet have earned veteran status in their own right. Their ninth LP In A Cave offers a lithe blend of the signature psychedelia of their early work with their recent detour into sprightly ‘70s pop, sidling from the deconstructed, languid doze of “A Tired Army” and baked oddity of “Window to Mars,” to traveling bard folk of “The Demon’s Daughter” and “Paralyzed,” which plays like a glossier Tom Petty road song. Over the course of the album’s 40 minutes, its relaxed trip through 13 songs delicately unveils itself as a collection of sturdy gems worth repeated listens, which spans the breadth of Elf Power’s abilities, and will likely stand as one of their finer efforts.
