Respectability is just a shot away for Taylor Swift, a talented pop-country songwriter who’s had to put up with more than her share of haterade from folks who find her overrated and over-exposed. But the 23-year-old mega-star is more gifted than she’s given credit for, as our 2011 cover story attests.

Last night in Chicago, Swift joined The Rolling Stones onstage for a version of “As Tears Go By,” a Richards/Jagger classic originally given to Marianne Faithfull (Mick’s old girlfriend).

“We’re gonna slow it down for you now and do a bit of a ballad,” Jagger explained. “It’s one we haven’t done in quite a long time. It was the first song that Keith and I wrote together. We didn’t do it at the time, we gave it to someone else, a young lady to sing. But we’re gonna do it now, with a bit of hope.”

While we would have preferred to hear something more faux country, like “Dead Flowers” or maybe “Sweet Virginia,” Swift did an admirable job of handling her vocal parts, laying down a nice harmony in the choruses. But we’ve seen her do decent covers of British rockers before, like this Coldplay cover from a few years back.

What do you think, readers… did the dice tumble in Swift’s favor last night?
