David Gilmour To Perform at Pompeii, Site of Famous Pink Floyd Concert Film

This summer, David Gilmour will return to the amphitheater at Pompeii for two concerts at the location where his former band Pink Floyd performed one of their most memorable sets. Gilmour’s two shows–scheduled for July 7 and 8–come 45 years after Pink Floyd recorded their famous concert film, Pink Floyd: Live at Pompeii, in the city’s ancient venue.

Much like the band’s music, Live at Pompeii–which was filmed in 1971 and first released in 1972– found Pink Floyd pushing the boundaries of the concert film as an art form. While the progressive rock band performed an engaging set of many of their most popular songs for the movie, the amphitheater was completely void of an audience. This time around, Gilmour will indeed have an audience, as the two Pompeii shows are part of a tour supporting Gilmour’s 2015 solo release, Rattle That Lock. Check out a full list of tour dates below.

The previous year, Pink Floyd released The Endless River. The album, which includes older recordings with late singer-pianist Rick Wright, served as  Gilmour and drummer Nick Mason’s tribute their bandmate, who passed away in 2008. Gilmour told BBC that the record would be Pink Floyd’s last, saying, “This is the last thing that’ll be out from us…I’m pretty certain there will not be any follow-up to this.”
