David Archuleta and Others Are Loving Sabrina Carpenter, Putting New Spins on Her Big Summer Hits

Sabrina Carpenter has two of the summer’s biggest hits right now—”Espresso” and “Please Please Please,” which have helped catapult her to super-stardom this year. Everyone and their mom knows these songs, and most likely loves them, as they’re catchy, summery, girly-pop hits perfect for the hottest season of the year. Now, other artists and bands have caught the Sabrina Carpenter bug and taken it upon themselves to cover these songs for programs like SiriusXM and Alt J.

Here are three of those covers, which shine a light further on these hits but also bring attention to the artists covering them. They each take unique approaches to “Espresso” and “Please Please Please,” altering the genre and style and making them their own.

David Archuleta Shows Off with Sabrina Carpenter’s “Please Please Please”

Recently, American Idol alum David Archuleta took “Please Please Please” for a spin on SiriusXM. He performed the song live for the program, sitting between a keyboard player and percussionist. Archuleta stripped the song down to its basics, turning it into a smooth indie jam. His high-register vocals are on display, as the stripped-down instrumentation allows him to shine. A nerve-wracking place to be in for anyone else, but Archuleta takes it in stride and shows why he was an American Idol finalist.

Wallows Takes on “Espresso”

Again for SiriusXM, Wallows took a stab at the song of the summer, Sabrina Carpenter’s “Espresso.” The trio turned the fun pop song into a moody indie rendition, bringing the tone down and turning it syrupy and sexy with their expert use of both electric and acoustic guitar. It has a bit of a yacht-rock sound, but its sultry. This version also lets the lyrics stand out, as the slower, darker vibe allows Carpenter’s turns of phrase to shine.

Good Neighbours Turn “Espresso” Into a 2010 Indie Hit

For Alt J’s Like A Version program, Good Neighbours took “Espresso” and completely flipped the script. They turned it into something that would sound right at home on a 2010 indie playlist. The jumpy drumbeat and staccato guitar, along with the synthy piano, sound like they were pulled straight from a Matt & Kim record. This is the most transformative “Espresso” has ever been, turning an already cute song that much cuter. There’s a certain vibe that the 2010s indie scene had, and Good Neighbours nailed all the quirky, twee sounds that made that era what it was.
