ARTIST: Young Buffalo
SONG: “Beat Back”
HOMETOWN: Oxford, Mississippi
CURRENT LOCATION: Springfield, Missouri
AMBITIONS: To make a living making music. If that can’t happen, making records without getting paid is still a blast. Win/win
TURN-OFFS: Broken strings suck.
TURN-ONS: An outstanding monitor mix really turns me on.
DREAM GIG: Playing the main stage at Bonnaroo on an unseasonably cool night, I mean we’re talking 75 degrees..PS: Who am I kidding? Playing the Bonnaroo main stage regardless of weather has been a dream for a minute.
FAVORITE LYRIC: This may not be my favorite lyric of all time, but it’s definitely a road dog song so it’s hitting me in the right spot: “The sound of strangers sending nothing to my mind/Just another mad mad day on the road/I am just living to be lying by your side/But I’m just about a moonlight mile on down the road” “Moonlight Mile” by the Rolling Stones
SONG I WISH I WROTE: “Crimson and Clover” by Tommy James and the Shondells
5 PEOPLE I’D MOST LIKE TO HAVE DINNER WITH: George Harrison, Bill Murray, Larry David, Stevie Nicks, and Bernie Sanders.
MY FAVORITE CONCERT EXPERIENCE: Seeing Animal Collective at The Library in Oxford during the summer of ’09 was great for a lot of reasons. I’d never seen a show at this venue (kind of a frat bar) but it sounded amazing and their light show was incredible. Also, I had just graduated high school and certain substances had me feeling, er, very good to say the least.
I WROTE THIS SONG BECAUSE…I had been dealing with a break up and this was the song that I wrote when I was like “get out of the dumps and stop being emo man”. It’s funny that Beat Back is the sack-up and move on kind of song because it is kind of slow and very pop-y. Not a “pumped up bro” kind of song, but I think it works.
