SONG: “Bird Song”

HOMETOWN: Portland, Oregon

Videos by American Songwriter

CURRENT LOCATION: Atlanta, Georgia

AMBITIONS: To gather people together through music. To foster community among people who value art, ecology, human unity and a good story. To make our next record with a producer who truly inspires us.

TURN-OFFS: Watching the clock in a studio. Smokey bar, broken PA and a loud, drunk audience. Clichés, fossil fuels, cynicism, unimaginative political leaders with a lame agenda, CGI…

TURN-ONS: Festivals, especially ones with lots of family. Long, intelligent conversations about sustainability, social equality and consciousness. That magical state a room achieves when great performance meets dialed-in sound and an audience can take chances stepping into wonder.

DREAM GIG: The Woods Stage at PICKATHON on Saturday afternoon. (www.pickathon.com).

FAVORITE LYRIC: “A thorn by any other name draws blood.” – “Red (Elegy)” by Dave Carter

SONG I WISH I WROTE: “I Dream a Highway” by Gillian Welch

5 PEOPLE I’D MOST LIKE TO HAVE DINNER WITH: Emmylou Harris, Noam Chomsky, Alice Walker, Evo Morales, Joe Henry – all together, please.

MY FAVORITE CONCERT EXPERIENCE: Leonard Cohen in 2009 at the Fox Theatre in Atlanta, Georgia

I WROTE THIS SONG BECAUSE… It was a rainy day in Portland, and we had the blues. We are big lovers of Elizabeth Cotten, Rev. Gary Davis, Townes Van Zandt and Doc Watson, so we usually shake out a finger-picking song or two for every clutch of songs we write.
