I WROTE THIS SONG: at least the music for it, fairly quickly. Then I sat on it for a couple of years until I sent a demo to a songwriting partner, Rebecca Jones. Something about the feeling of the melody, and probably the sound of my newborn son squealing in the background, inspired an idea. She sent me back a line or two, and this notion that parents’ unfulfilled dreams are often passed on to their children. Just days before I had been reading a biography about Paul McCartney; his father and father’s father had been aspiring musicians but ultimately faced the realities of the business and got proper jobs.
