Daily Discovery: Effron White, “Long Haul”

Videos by American Songwriter

Musicians Corner Fall 2012 Winner:

ARTIST: Effron White

SONG: “Long Haul”

BIRTHDATE: July 20, 1954

BIRTHPLACE: West Memphis, AR

AMBITIONS: To live well doing the things I love (preferably before my upcoming “retirement”…)

TURN-OFFS: Smart aleck answers to interview questions.

TURN-ONS: Songs that spin your head around.

DREAM GIG: One in which my stage banter is so engaging, my performance so flawless, and my song delivery so heartfelt by myself and the audience, that everyone runs the gamut from tears to laughter, to a major positive reckoning of the soul.

PETS: One dog, Lulu – a Border Collie/Spaniel mix; and a cat, Snoop – one of those black and white “tuxedo” kind. He matches the dog very well, and they are great friends.

WORDS TO LIVE BY: “He not busy being born is busy dying” –Bob Dylan

MY PREFERRED METHOD OF TRANSPORTATION: A comfortable, gasoline efficient land vehicle with a good sound system.

5 THINGS EVERY MAN SHOULD OWN: A Bible; a Scotch/3M ATG tape gun (ask a professional picture framer about this); a Cuisinart 10 cup coffee
percolator, the model with the carafe that keeps the coffee hot and fresh all day, even though it turns itself off after the coffee is brewed; a toothbrush; and himself.

I NEVER LEAVE HOME WITHOUT: My iPhone and my guitar.

I WROTE THIS SONG: On a music tour in Tennessee. I woke up in a crummy hotel room in Murfreesboro, and began singing about this trucker. I guess there are correlations between truckers and traveling troubadours, so feeling the road weariness and thinking about some of the deeper issues in my own life, I was able to conjure up this story that I could relate to wholeheartedly.

Effron White was selected to perform on the Lightning 100 Acoustic Stage at Musicians Corner, Saturday September 8th in Nashville’s Centennial Park. Music begins at 3 PM and includes performances from Matthew Perryman Jones, Marie Hines, and Goodbye June.
