Meeting at Appomattox: The Civil Wars Call It Quits, For Good

After months of uncertainty about the duo’s status, The Civil Wars made it known Monday that they have indeed permanently parted ways. Joy Williams and John Paul White had announced an indefinite hiatus in 2012, citing “internal discord and irreconcilable differences in ambition.” The release of their excellent self-titled album in 2013 fueled hopes that the secession wasn’t to last, even though the two weren’t speaking and had canceled their tour dates. Maybe we were just trying to convince ourselves that it wasn’t over for good.

In any case, this time the split is real.“I am saddened and disappointed by the ending of this duo, to say the very least. JP is a tremendous musician, and I will always be grateful for the music we were able to create together,” said Williams.

White added, “I would like to express sincere thanks to all who were a part of the arc of The Civil Wars—from the beginning, to the end, and all points in between. My deep appreciation goes out to all who supported, disseminated, and enjoyed the music. Whatever shape or form the next chapter takes, thanks for being a large part of this one.”

As a consolation to their fans, the two have made their gloomy 2010 recording of “You Are My Sunshine” available as a free download on their website. The song was previously released as the B-side to the limited-edition 7″ “Barton Hollow” single.
