Catie Offerman Recalls Her Not-So-Random First Run-in With George Strait: “I Probably Blacked out a Little Bit”

Last month, George Strait made music history when he packed Kyle Field and College Station, Texas. He played for a crowd of 110,905 fans, breaking the record for the biggest ticketed concert crowd in United States history. However, the King of Country Music wasn’t alone that night. He brought two of his fellow Texans to support him for the one-night-only event. Parker McCollum and up-and-comer Catie Offerman warmed up the massive crowd for Strait.

Offerman released her debut single “Happyland Trailer Park” in 2022. Since then, she has released a total of eight songs including “Ask Me to Dance” with Hayes Carll. In a recent interview, Offerman revealed that she shares a connection with Strait. At one time, they had the same hairdresser.

Catie Offerman Met George Strait in a Salon

Recently, Catie Offerman sat down with KSAT 12, a San Antonio, Texas-based ABC Affiliate. During the conversation, she recalled the first time she met George Strait.

“The first time I met George Strait was in a good ol’ San Antonio hair salon,” Offerman recalled. “I was going to this gal because I knew she did George’s hair,” she added. “Long story short, I never had her number. She had my phone number and she always told me, ‘One of these days, we’re going to try to make it work out where you’re here and George is here and I can connect y’all.’”

The night before that finally happened, the then-teenaged Offerman had played a show in Austin and drove back to her home in New Braunfels. “It had been a long night. We didn’t get back to New Braunfels until like 3 a.m. … I was going to sleep in a little bit that next morning and I had missed some texts on my phone,” she said. She looked at her phone, didn’t recognize the number, put her phone down, and went back to sleep. Around an hour later, she woke up to a text that read “Can you be here at 10:15 for a hair mask?”

“I’m like, ‘Oh, my God. It’s George. I know it’s George, I can feel it,” she recalled. So, Offerman ran downstairs and convinced her dad to take her to the salon in San Antonio. Offerman noted that she and her mother were “Classic get dolled up kind of people.” However, she knew she didn’t have time for all of that. So, she used some dry shampoo, put on her boots, and got in the car.

A Long Drive and a Hair Mask Later…

After getting to the salon, she was taken to a seat to get her hair mask. Though they were facing different directions, she was just feet away from one of her childhood heroes. “I’m like ‘I don’t know what the plan is here. I think I’m just chilling.’ So, I’m just playing it cool and George looks like he’s getting close to wrapping up soon. It’s not like there’s that much hair to cut,” she recalled.

Then, the hairdresser’s assistant came in with her hair mask. Offerman compared the concoction to the chicken fat her grandmother used to can for use in soups. After applying the mask and wrapping her head, she recalled the substance dripping down the side of her face. That’s when the hairdresser called her to the front of the salon to meet Strait.

“We just talked for about twenty minutes just about music we loved. I probably blacked out a little bit,” Offerman recalled.
